Boston bombings create questions on immigration reform bill

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky, called for a delay on the immigration reform debate today. According to an article from the Boston Globe, Paul wanted to focus on strengthening national security before considering comprehensive immigration reform.

According to an article by MSNBC, the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings are a major reason halts are being called on immigration reform. During a Friday Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the legislation, during the manhunt for the bombing suspects, lawmakers were already beginning to use the suspects’ path into the country as reasons to put the breaks on reform.

Immigration overhaul seems to still be on track despite the Boston bombings, according to an article by NPR. In contrast to Sen. Paul’s argument, some co-authors of the bill think immigration reform will improve national security. “Reasons why we need comprehensive immigration reform is because it will enhance when implemented our national security,” co-authors of the bill said.
